About The Event

Join us for this candid SCOOP about the mysterious methods of film critique.

Publicists and critics are very different in their approach and what they can do to bring attention to a film. Publicists are paid salespersons, hired to boost a film with releases and other positive propaganda. They tend to the needs of the film.

Critics are paid (usually much less than publicists), to give audiences guidance about a film's artistic and contextual merit or lack thereof. They tend to the needs of the audience. These pursuits don't align. Although it's a common misconception that they are variations on the enterprise of marketing.

We depend on each other, but there is a clear line of division in acceptable practice. Critics receive an onslaught of PR pitches, some of which are quite off-putting to serious critics (as opposed to influencers or tastemakers).

Jennifer Merin will share her opinions about film criticism, what to submit in your press packet for critics, why avoid overexposure before distribution, what not to do when you want your film to shine.

May 14th, 3p - 4:30p ET | 12p - 1:30p PT | 7p - 8:30p GMT
